Merkel Condemns Attack on Two Men Wearing Skullcaps in Germany

By Kirsten Grieshaber
Associated Press

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday sharply condemned a street assault in Berlin on two young men wearing Jewish skullcaps that has stoked the debate about anti-Semitism in the country.

In a surprising twist, however, the victim of the attack, who identified himself on Israeli television as Adam Armoush, later told German TV that he wasn't Jewish, but an Israeli from an Arab family.

Armoush told Deutsche Welle Television that he wore the skullcap to make a point to a friend who said it was risky to do so in Germany.
"I was saying it's really safe and I wanted to prove it, but it ended like that," he said.
Regardless of Armoush's intention, it comes at a time of increased fears of anti-Semitism and indications that attacks against Jews are on the rise.

A video of the attack Tuesday showing Armoush being whipped with a belt quickly went viral with people assuming that Armoush was Jewish.

Merkel called the attack in the city's trendy Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood "a very horrible incident" and vowed the government would respond "with full force and resolve" against growing anti-Semitism in Germany.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted that "Jews shall never again feel threatened here."
"It's our responsibility to protect Jewish life here," he wrote in reference to the killing of 6 million European Jews by Germany under the Nazis in the Holocaust more than 70 years ago.
Berlin police said the two men with the skullcaps were 21 and 24 years old but didn't identify them.

The video doesn't show the outbreak of the fight or how it started, but Armoush told Israeli Kan TV said he was leaving his Berlin home when the three people started cursing at them.
"They kept cursing us and my friend asked them to stop cursing," Armoush told Israeli Kan TV in Hebrew. "They started to get angry and one of them ran to me and I knew it was important to film it because there would be no way to catch him by the time police arrived."
Police said they are still looking for the attackers.

Two Jewish organizations posted the video, which showed a young man attacking Armoush while yelling "Yahudi!" or "Jew" in Arabic.

French Police Called in After Student, 10, Beaten at School ‘for Being Jewish’

40,000 French Jews Have Emigrated Since 2006

By Simon Kent
Breitbart News, Jerusalem

A French schoolgirl was beaten so badly over consecutive days she needed hospitalization after being attacked by classmates “for being Jewish.”

The 10-year-old studies at a school in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, where she was insulted and beaten so severely by anti-Semitic bullies it was confirmed at hospital that she had suffered injuries to her ribs and abdomen and a 10-day period of convalesence was needed.
The mother reported the incident to France’s anti-Semitism watchdog, the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism (BNVCA). It published details of the incident on October 3rd.

The watchdog has now called on police to investigate the alleged anti-Semitic incident.

The BNVCA has also alerted the Paris Local Education Authority. They confirmed that they would take the incident seriously and would transfer the child to a school of her choice after the mother alleged the school failed to take appropriate measures to protect her child, or to punish the bullies.

France is currently being convulsed by a string of violent anti-Semitic attacks that have prompted Jews to call on government authorities to tackle what they say is an epidemic of “societal anti-Semitism.”
The European Jewish Congress (EJC) made the call days after an attack on a French Jewish leader and his family in their home outside Paris. As Breitbart Jerusalem reported, France’s Interior Minister GĂ©rard Collomb said “the motivation for this cowardly act appears to be directly linked to their religion.”
That assault followed reports that a former principal at a preparatory school for teenagers in Marseille said Jews were told not to attend his institution for fear of harassment by other students.
The level of harassment has become so bad that more and more French Jews are deciding to leave the country as they feel safer in Israel than in France.
In January it was reported that another 5,000 French Jews emigrated to Israel in 2016, continuing a trend that has seen tens of thousands quit the country after a series of attacks targeting the community.

Antisemitic Incidents Rise Sharply as 'Worrying Trend' Continues

The Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, told MPs he was "deeply concerned"
about the rise of antisemitism

Antisemitic incidents rose by 11 per cent in the first six months of the year in a "worrying trend" developing in the UK.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors the safety of the Jewish community, compiled data on hate incidents targeted at Jews and said there had been 577 cases from January to June 2016, up from 473 in the same period last year.

The charity said there was "no obvious single cause" for the rise.
However it said the from April to June there was "sustained public debate about antisemitism, particularly in relation to the Labour Party, and about racism and extremism more generally".
An inquiry into antisemitism was launched by the Labour party after the suspension of Naz Shah MP and former mayor of London Ken Livingston. It found the party was not overrun by antisemitism but admitted an "occasionally toxic atmosphere".

The CST report found that a quarter of recorded instances involved social media, which had become an "essential tool" for those who wanted to harass, abuse or threaten Jews. A total of 431 incidents related to abuse, which included verbal abuse, antisemitic graffiti, abuse online and hate mail.

More than three-quarters of incidents were recorded in Greater London and Greater Manchester, both cities with large Jewish populations. But the 62 incidents that happened in Manchester represented a 54 per cent fall compared to last year.
The charity's chief executive, David Delew, said: "This rise in reported antisemitism comes at a time when division, intolerance and prejudice appear to be deepening within our society."

Kuwait Airways Clings to Anti-Semitic Boarding Practice

Kuwait Airways is clinging to an anti-Semitic law that bans the sale of tickets to Jews on its New York-London flights, according to a New York attorney fighting the practiceThat’s even though the U.S. government has ordered the company based in the Muslim nation to halt such discrimination in the United States.

Lawyer Jeffrey A. Lovitky, who several years ago had exposed a similar practice by Delta Airlines due to a code-sharing arrangement with Saudi Arabian Airlines, told WND that Kuwait Airways’ permission to use American airports should be terminated.

“Kuwait Airways is acting at the explicit direction of the government of Kuwait in excluding Israeli citizens from its flights between New York and London,” he told WND.

“The Kuwaiti government’s embrace of the Arab boycott of Israel is a manifestation of its deep hostility towards the Jewish people. I call upon the Congress to make it a crime for any company to boycott Israeli citizens, when such boycott is at the direction of a foreign government.

“And I call upon the Secretary of Transportation to emphatically reject this manifestation of bigotry against the Jewish people, by immediately terminating Kuwait Airways permit to fly between the United States and the United Kingdom,” he said.

Lovitky said he filed a formal complaint with the Department of Transportation in 2013 alleging illegal discrimination.

It was rejected because Kuwait Airways “was required to follow Kuwait law.”  But he said when he filed a lawsuit, on behalf of Eldad Gatt of Jerusalem against the federal agency, the decision ultimately was reversed.
