Asia Bibi, a Christian woman recently acquitted of blasphemy, is still unable to leave Pakistan even after her acquittal was upheld by the country’s Supreme Court. According to a friend, the 54-year-old is becoming increasingly frightened and frustrated with the uncertainty of her future.
Aman Ullah spoke to Bibi by telephone last Friday and reported Bibi has no indication of when she will be allowed to leave Pakistan. Bibi and her husband have reportedly been moved from a secret location near Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad to a new location in Karachi.
According to Ullah, diplomats working to get Bibi and her husband out of Pakistan were told that her departure would come in the “medium term”. For now, Bibi reportedly remains locked in a single room of a house where the door is opened only at meal times. However, she is still allowed to make phone calls in the mornings and at night.
On October 31, 2018, Pakistan’s Supreme Court acquitted Bibi of the controversial blasphemy charges that had kept her on death row for nearly a decade. This acquittal sparked three days of protests by religious extremists that nearly brought the country to a standstill.
Following the protests, the Pakistani Government agreed to have the Supreme Court review its decision. On January 29, the Supreme Court upheld Bibi’s acquittal and many thought that she would finally be free to leave Pakistan and join her daughters who have sought asylum in Canada.
